2021 Mohican Chiefs Regatta

A week before the event, hosting a regatta seemed doubtful for MSC, as Charles Mill Lake (a flood control reservoir) was a full eight feet above normal due to some heavy rain in the watershed in early May. Fortunately, with the cooperation of Mother Nature, the lake level came down to within two feet of normal, and a dedicated group of MSC members led by Rear Commodore Tom Wills showed up on Friday the 21st to get the docks back into position, the hoist working, the committee and safety boats running, and debris cleaned up so that the club could host sailors on Saturday.
And there is still COVID out there. After missing our two regattas in 2020 and following the lead of Asheville Sailing Club this spring and MSC’s Haphazard regatta last fall, we opted for a free event focused on sailing and eliminated all of the indoor and non-socially distanced activities like registration, meals and a trophy presentation.
The plan seemed agreeable, as we had a fleet of 11 boats, including three from Cleveland, two from Columbus, and six from Mohican – four of which were the Joudrey/Zaugg clan, with Paul and Tom traveling to participate, and Mike Chambers, who flew home from Maine to participate.
Mother Nature continued to cooperate, with light to moderate NW wind on Saturday and moderate plus NW wind on Sunday with temps in the 80s and a few drops of rain on Saturday.
Our RC, Mike Fulton, assisted by Heather Fitz Gibbon on Saturday and Cara Sanderson Bown (a new PRO) on Sunday, ran seven races on a windward-leeward course that took advantage of the length of the lake available with a NW wind. Kudos to Nate Ireland and Ben Stock for sailing an almost error free series, and to everyone who came out to enjoy the opportunity to sail with good friends of the Jet 14 class.
