After a year off, 84 boats and 8 Jets returned to Kerr Lake for the 64th NC Governor's Cup regatta. The best part of this regatta was the number of first timers that participated in the Jet-14 class. We had five youths that attended with four filling out two boats and a brand-new crew member who up to a week ago never sailed before. Emily Mann (ASC), crewing for Paula Hennon, participated in her first "real" regatta.

The Carolina Sailing Club did an outstanding job setting up the regatta. They split up the competitors into two big groups. They held the skipper meeting via zoom on Thursday prior to race day. They had all 84 boats on one course with six different starts. Amazing thing there were no delays once the racing began. The Jets started with the 8 boat Flying Scot fleet.

Saturday was an ideal day for sailing; partly cloudy with southerly winds at 12-18 knots, temperatures in the middle 80s F. A couple of breakdowns on the sail out to the course quashed the championship hopes of two contenders. Chris Hennon had his tiller extension disintigrate in his hands and had to return for some heavy tape "repair", missing the first race. Kevin Trebilcock had a bit of a more serious issue, with the forestay chainplate ripping out of the foredeck and taking him out for the day. Kevin vows he'll start a race in 544 someday.

After two races in moderate-heavier breeze and one in moderate-light wind, sailors retired to the campground for swimming and some perverted and ridiculously complicated card game where a creepy dude speaks out instructions from a recording and participants had to identify the werewolf, or something. Sunday's racing was cancelled as the remains of Tropical Storm Claudette moved through the area, bringing thunderstorms and heavy rain showers.
