2013 Mohican Chiefs Regatta

Mohican Sailing Club, Mansfield OH

May 18-19

Fourteen Jet 14s were greeted to Mohican Sailing Club for the 2013 Chief’s regatta. For being mid-Ohio in the middle of May, the weather was outstanding. Temperatures were in the low 80s, wind was 6-12 mph, and the sun was shining brightly all weekend.

The event started off with lunch hosted by Mr. and Mr. Chambers. Shortly after, PRO Mike Fulton got racing underway. Race 1 saw team Michos sniff out the first shifts, and pull out to a commanding lead. They easily won the race, never having to look back. During race 2, class newcomers Mike (grandfather) and Mariah (granddaughter) Taylor in 822 suffered a de-masting after one of their cotter pins pulled out of the shrouds. Fortunately the rig came down slowly and no one was hurt. Paul Joudrey came back to town from NYU for the weekend, not missing a beat. He was in the lead for most of race 2, but apparently forgot to count laps. One the last beat to the finish, team Parker was able to sneak in for the win as Paul was on his way to sailing another lap.

In race 3, Barb Joudrey pulled some of her magic and hit the right side when no one else did. She easily led to the top mark, but the Mohican winds allowed the rest of the fleet to catch up. After a tough battle, and some crazy shifts, Barb with crew Garth ended the race in 3rd. Paul Joudrey had another great one in race 4, finishing second. Bridget Ireland (back after a family making hiatus) with crew Joe Minard sailed strong to finish 3rd.

Saturday night, sailors were treated to a spaghetti and veggie lasagna dinner with all the fixings. Chef Marion Zaugg ended the night early in order to rest for the Sunday morning HEMAN ritual. To say the least, it was another outstanding performance by Marion and his French toast sidekick Ernie Michaud. The HEMAN alone justifies the trip to Mansfield for any true Jet 14 sailor!

The breeze on Sunday morning built to another beautiful 6-12 mph by the first gun. Team Parker was able to sniff out a few shifts to keep them ahead of 1132 and 217 for the win in race 5. This apparently upset the folks in 1132, as they put the hammer down to easily win race 6. The final race of the regatta saw several lead changes, and perhaps some confusion as the RC shortened the course to allow the fleet to finish near the club. 1135, 1132, 1147, 217 were all in contention, with 1135 edging out 1132 at the finish line.

In all, everyone enjoyed a great weekend in Mansfield. The weather was great, the racing was tight, and the food and camaraderie was second to none. It was great to see several new faces, and it was great to see Nate and Bridget Ireland back in their boats again.
