2010 Buckeye Blast Regatta

Hoover Sailing Club, Westerville OH

October 2-3

The name of the regatta speaks for itself, and it did not let us down yet again. The weather report tried it's best to scare everyone off, but eleven boats braved the cool temperature change and strong expected winds to join the Hooverians for the 2010 Buckeye Blast.

The
race committee utilized the room that the national crew regatta and the wind direction allowed us. This made for eight short course races that emphasized boat handling, mark rounding, and starts as keys to a successful race. As you see from the scores no one team mastered these fundamentals...but consistency pays.

The first race involved extreme wind and velocity shifts. Most mark rounding involved at least four boats with the finishing places of most boats being in question until the very end. A boat in particular was in third place and tenth place depending on when you were watching. It was the "wizard of wind" Marion Zaugg and his crew "the boat whisperer" Carol that wiggled their way around the course to win in dominating fashion. Bridget and Joe managed a second place finish despite being over early. They were close enough to 1132 to capitalize just in case a catastrophic mistake should occur. Dave and Sue Michos finished third with their new Allen. It was good to see 1157 out there and moving.

As I am trying to highlight finishes here I noticed that there were 7 boats that had a third place or better finish...and EVERY boat had a sixth place or worse finish. This just goes to show how close the racing was. Among those that were hard to beat was the team of Ivan Baker and Mike Moes who had all but one top five finish. The same is to be said for Bridget and Joe, and of course Bryan and Tiffany Parker who managed a slower start to the regatta only to win three of the last five races. Chuck Connors and Craig Kvale were also always at the top ready to pounce on any mistakes. Speaking of mistakes, I should note that we were miss scored the first race and finished sixth. This changes the final scores to put #530 into fifth place overall. I guess all the gushing I did about the fifth place team remains true.

We were fortunate to have many new faces. Mark Presley, an Interlake sailor, sailed with
Steve Bauer, a regular on the Highlander and Thistle scene. Seth Parker and Sean Dillon (Lightnings) also hopped in a boat and coskippered together. The scores really don't indicate how well they all sailed. Each boat was always in the pack all the way to the finish. This is even more impressive realizing that they have not had the time in Jets to get the feel for the boat. It was good to see #884 out there, and Karen made the most of visiting the lake that while she found time to sail really well, she also enjoyed the water so much she hopped in. Stuart Butcher is very excited for the year to come because he seems to have found a steady crew in Kristen Mastrangelo. They plan on coming to Hoover a few times next year to do some sparring.

There is just so much to write but not enough time or space. We couldn't have had such a successful regatta without such great committee work. Also, a special thanks to Bridged for making the decoupaged trophies, and to Chipotle for their catering.  We hope to see everyone here next year...but until then, Mohican
!
