2009 Buckeye Blast Regatta

Hoover Sailing Club, Westerville, OH

October 3-4

Jet Fleet 64 and Hoover Sailing Club hosted the 3rd annual Buckeye Blast, October 3-4.    The 10 boat fleet was greeted with a steady breeze in the mid-teens with gusts over 20 for much of the weekend.  But with the breeze up, the race committee had no problem getting 4 races in both Saturday and Sunday.  The name of the game was keeping the boat upright and all parts intact.  Only 4 accomplished these goals and each found themselves in the top 4 for the regatta.  This doesn't mean that there wasn't some fierce competition on the water between all the participants, though.

Bryan and Tiffany Parker (1135) proved to be stiff competition in any conditions, running up an impressive line with 4 firsts and 4 seconds.  Steve Lanvender, a local Thistle stalwart, picked a great weekend for his first time in the boat.  After finishing 6th in the first race, Steve turned up the heat with a bullet in the second race.  He and his crew, Punch Metcalf, were right at home up screaming down the run on plane.  Both remarked how much fun they had in the boat and enjoyed the responsiveness and handling, even in the big breeze.  Steve was consistently at the top of the fleet and finished second overall.  Hopefully he will be joining us again soon!

The second race proved to be the most difficult of the weekend.  Nate Ireland (1134) was forced to retire with rudder/tiller issues; a problem that plagued him much of the weekend.  Jim and Andrew Hermetet got caught in on of the heavier gusts while on the run and quickly found 1136 filled with half of Hoover Reservoir, but were still able to finish the race.    Marion and Carol Zaugg (1132) were less fortunate, when a pin came out on one of their side stays causing the already limber DM-1 to flop around like a wet noodle in 20+ knots of breeze.  They retired immediately and spent much of the extended lunch break bending the mast against trees and other objects to straighted out the spar.    Whatever they did seemed to work, as they went 1-2 in the races after lunch.  Marion said that the complete bending and straightening process will be added to tuning guide by the spring.

The group retired around
5PM and gathered around the fireplace to enjoy a burrito bar and Bridget's famous buckeyes!
Sunday brought more of the same breeze.  Also, Mike Brock, soon to be in possession of the second Allen Jet, joined the fleet in The Incredible Hull.  It was great to have him on the water and we all look forward to seeing his and other Allen boats on the water in the coming years.

Bridget Ireland and Joe Minerd (1147) found "the llama"
on Sunday and cruised to a string of 1-3-2-2 finishes, landing them in 3rd place overall.  Brad Koinis and Charles Murman (1091) used their weight to their advantage in the puffs to make huge gains to windward on the fleet.  Consistently nipping at the heels of the leaders led to a 4th place finish.  Nate and Brian Hoy were able to overcome a second tiller malfunction on Sunday to round out the top 5, with Craig Kvale in 530 following closely behind.
Many thanks go out to those that helped make the regatta a success.  Bridget and Nate Ireland did a fantastic job in the kitchen, while balancing sailing, breakdowns and baby Vincent at the same time.    Thank you to Marion for putting an official Jet flag together for the Hoover Sailing Club and also for bringing Mike a boat to sail on Sunday.  Matt Scantland was able to sneak away from his wedding preparations to run a great group of
race committee members including Rich Rykens, Ben Stock, and members of the Ohio State Sailing Team:  Loren Varvarosky, Neal Gordon, Rachel Youkers and Aaron Maley.    Thank you to Steve Lavender for joining us on the water and everyone else that traveled to Columbus for the regatta.
