June 21-22
With all of the scary weather in the forecast leading up to Cleveland Race Week, I was excited to see such a great turnout. We were able to swap stories off the water with many familiar Jet 14 faces that were sailing the big boat one design races.
In classic Ohio fashion we had a mix of everything on the race course from extreme plaining and downpours, to working on our tans floating on the mirror like lake. Joe Minerd and I were very fortunate in getting descent starts, sailing the right tacks, and staying in the wind. We used that momentum to win the first two races. Marion and Carol were lightning fast…unfortunately they decided to have that extra cup of coffee at home and missed the first start. They followed up the DNS with all ones and twos. Also near the front were Dave and Sue Michos, as well as Ivan Baker and pickup crew #1. Ivan sailed consistently fast when they kept their mast out of the water. That’s two regattas in a row Ivan…it’s not a trend is it?!? Just before the fourth race, Cliff’s shroud snapped breaking his mast. His new nickname is now “Bob.”
On Sunday the weather started out great with sunny skies and wind 5-10mph. Marion took the lead early with Ivan close behind in second. Nate Ireland with pickup crew #2 shot out of the starting line to win the second race of the day. Brad Koinis and James Hermetet showed off their boat speed by each having three top five finishes. We had an almost completed seventh race, but with the skies growing ferociously grey, the race committee decided to abandon. The Jets made it back to club and on the trailers just before the hail storm began.
I also want to throw in a plug for Women and Junior Nationals. By the buzz we were hearing at Cleveland there looks to be a pretty good turnout. I believe a large portion of the class growth could be with women and juniors. Let’s do what we can to have a good showing.
