Chili Bowl sailed in beautiful weather – We had a great day to sail with sunny skies and a decent breeze (for 3 of 4 races at least) for the 2008 Chili Bowl. PRO Joe Volter put together a great team of Race Committee officials for the 14 boats that entered the event. Thanks to Joe and his team of Ginia Volter, Brian McSweeney , Mike Dills, Al Hensel , Kevin Peshek, Greg VanPelt (I think I got most of them…) Also I want to thank Craig Kvale for putting together the breakfast and doing the registrations. Finally, thanks to the Butchers, Stuart and David and all the other people who helped set up and clean up for the party. The 14 entries set a new record for this event. The previous high number of entries was last year with 12. Hank Boissoneault came over from The Sandusky Sailing Club but had lost his crew… so Olivia Rault jumped in a did a great job, even though it has been some time since she crewed in a Jet14. Wes Kroze also sailed well, and this was only his second time out in a Jet14. Cathy Rakovan sailed in her very first Jet14 races and did very well. Heidi Adelman is back in the class, this time sharing skippering duties with Cliff Peshek. Next year both Cathy and Heidi will be back on the Fleet 60 starting line in their new boats.
We got 4 races in, sailing in patchy, shifty breeze. The top competitors were the ones who found the pressure AND managed to play the somewhat regular oscillating breeze. In the 4th race, the breeze shut off about the time the first four boats finished, and several boats were not able to finish under the time limit.
The Chili cook-off was a feast for all the chili lovers. Despite some flagrant ballot box stuffing by a certain Greek former Class President, the winning recipe was whipped up by Camille Kvale. Her entry was a spicy number which was very popular as evidence by the empty chili pot. The party went on well into the evening, and I can personally say that a good time was had by all.
