October 4-5
15 boats showed up to sail the 2nd annual Buckeye Blast, and what a blast it was! The Columbus gang did an outstanding job of hosting the event. Sailors were treated to a Saturday sub-lunch and a “mmm-mmm-mmm” burrito dinner. Was there supposed to be a pancake breakfast Sunday morning? The world may never know. Who ever decided to start those things before 9:30 am anyways? The pre-awards grilled burgs and dogs hit the spot though!
As for the weather gods….well….at least we had some breeze. Both days saw winds of 0-5ish mph, with little blasts every now and then. The shifts, on the other hand, were definitely some of Hoover’s finest. That combination made for some mixed-up tight racing. After Saturday’s 4 races, Team Zaugg, Team Bridget Ireland, Team Ivan Baker, Team Nate Ireland, Team Michos, and Team Taylor were right on Team Parker’s heels. The top 6 or 7 boats were only separated by a few points – it was still anyone’s weekend.
Sunday morning started off glassy, but the cat paws arrived in time for the start. 3 more races were sailed in conditions very similar to Saturday. When all the results were tallied, the top 5 boats were all separated by a few points, and Team Parker was able to pull off their first win.
A big “thanks” goes to Bridget and Nate Ireland, as well as
Brad Koinis for organizing and hosting the event. The OSU sailing team did a
great job of setting the course and just leaving it – ‘cause they knew it’d be
right at some point.
