2007 Spring Series I

Severn Sailing Association, Annapolis, MD

April 22

Ten sets of crews and drivers arrived at SSA this Sunday to sail Spring I under sunny skies and light breezes.  Race committee postponed racing, waiting for breeze to materialize out on the bay and several eager Jet sailors launched their boats to sail around in the Severn's thermal southerly breeze.   The practice time was welcome a opportunity to shake out kites and get used to new boats.  At least four boats were sailed by new Jet sailors or Jet sailors in new (or new to them boats).  Tom and Sarah, Thistle/Laser sailors from Cedar Point/NYC to sail around in 1130, Michael P. and Sean in newly restored 646 "Green Beans", Celeste in brand-spanking new 1152 and Max and me in new-to-us 1145.

The breeze never materialized out on the bay, but around 12:30 the race committee was able to set up a course in the Severn, nearby to SSA in about 5 knts.  A big shift to the left near the windward mark taught everyone that had gone right late a lesson, and helped out a few boats that been smart enough to stay toward the middle of the course, including James and Arianne in 1140.  Green Beans found its groove and took the 1st race followed by Gary and Cathy and James and Arianne.
The breeze built in the 2nd race to a steadier 5-10.  Max and I were determined not to make the same mistake twice and managed to stay in phase with the shifts to finish first, followed by a down to the wire finish in which Celeste narrowly beat Eric and Cathy who squeaked by Green Beans as Michael snuck by James by a hair.  Che and Chris, Tom and Sarah and Hank with crew Dick rounded out the fleet.

By race 3 it was a blustery 10-15 kns.  Tom and Sarah had figured out Jet sailing and ran away with first, followed by Celeste in 2nd.
One more race was sailed, and at the end of the day Michael and Sean were in 1st, followed by Tom and Sarah in 2nd and James and Arianne in 3rd.
After racing, beer and snacks were enjoyed and it was agreed that fun was had by all.  The newest Jet sailor, Violet Hale even made an appearance.  Debra says that the wind made her giggle...good sign.
We hope you will join us for SSA Spring II May 19-20, a two day event consisting of 1 day of training (fun style) and one day of racing.  I predict 15 boats!
