2007 President's Cup / Konigsburg Regatta

Potomac River, Alexandria, VA

September 8-9

80 to 100 boats all under 20 feet within spitting distance of Cunta Kinte himself.....

On the Jet course, on Saturday, All Bullets for the Mentasana team on #1144. Having not touched the rig or messed with the boat since he bought the Jibetech , 5 years ago. Enuff said... For the rest of us,.. Ted and Pete were fast after Ted moved the centerboard pin aft 1-5/16". Eric and Cathy found their groove and won a race, must be all that laser sailing Eric does on the river during the winter....

It was very interesting sailing. If you played the right side, it kept you out of the current and lifts toward the runway at National Airport until you ran aground, (Lucky we don't have wood or glass centerboards) This was usually the case in the first half of the windward leg, Then, in the second part, (mid runway at national airport) you could get a lift and (sometimes) more pressure by going left towards the mouth of the Anacostia. Downwind was equally challenging as if you again went towards the runway, you could get brief lifts. Not sure if this was off planes or not.

Dick Kennedy was was pushing the nostalgia thing, as after breaking his hiking stick, rather than using one of those new fangled portable electric drills he was using a worm drive hand drill... Carol commented that they have solidly upgraded the boat to 1980 specs!

The courses were long and after two races on Sunday, Elaine said she and James were going in. Ted and Pete concurred as the wind was dying and it was a long sail/ paddle back, we went chasing after Eric and Cathy who were already headed downwind. When we saw Eric head up, we all headed for the dock. It was a wise choice, as the wind shut off for the rest of the fleets.

The band was good and there were hot dogs, burgers and a keg. There is a award for the best score in fleets of over 10, so, I would recommend we do this again next year with a target number of boats being 18, as the Albacore's had 17 and the Lightnings had 15.

Many thanks to my wife Laury for coming out to sail with her husband.
