2006 Spring Series

Severn Sailing Association, Annapolis MD

April 15

The 1st Half of the Spring Series was sailed this past Saturday at SSA.  Six boats started off on the line that we shared with 505s and Lightings.  The 5-10 knot breeze started off out the west and shifted steadily around to the right all day.  The shift began quickly during the 1st race and the last downwind leg was a reach straight for the line.  Gary and Cathy Mentesana came out strong as ever and rightly won the 1st race after a wee altercation with the Reshetiloffs just yards before the finish line.  The Parramore's took 3rd place.  During the second race the 20 degree wind shift forced a course change for the 2nd windward leg.  Again, the Mentesana's came out on top.  As the breeze continued to shift, the course was changed again for the 3rd race (did I mention the course legs were about 1 mile long? It felt like 5 miles after our short frostbite courses all winter!) and then just died as the Jet starting gun blew.  Everyone drifted over the line and tried to aim for the windward mark.  About 1/3 of the way up - or was that down? - the leg, the spinnakers came out and the 4 jets that were left limped to the mark, whereupon Gary remarked "I think it's a mistake to go back that way", and he continued to head for home.  The Parramore's smartly took his lead and also headed for the dock.  The Reshetiloffs and James McKenna & crew however, decided to drift back towards the Eastern Shore to find the race committee had changed course again.  Our finish line was now about another mile beyond our original finish line.  The Reshetiloffs finally drifted past just before the Race Committee decided they'd punished us (and themselves) enough and abandoned the rest of the racing.
