June 3-4
The Parramore was contested June 3-4out of SSA, with 10 boats
registering, but several getting so blown about on Saturday that they
did not see too much action. Saturday's breeze was a low pressure driven
frontal thing that was blowing out of the West -- during racing hours
it was consistently above 20, and sometimes was a lot higher than that.
Several boats discovered that their main hoisting systems, their
crew-lower-back arrangements and/or their flip prevention and recovery systems were
somewhat below par. We managed to stay in one piece and won Saturday's only
race over the field that was still afloat.
Sunday dawned cooler and less breezy -- once again from the West.
(When you get your jetblasts you will find this author writing that it rarely
blows from the West in Annapolis, and that I don't know much about it. Still
don't). Kirby and Roberta came out in the power boat -- (Roberta,
back, not good) to take pictures. I am not sure what they got in race one -- it
was hooting pretty good and we were trying to keep it together -- but I'm
sure they got an eyeful in race 2. In that race I was SURE that the left
was going to pay (breeze coming down the channel!) and went off that way,
only to find that there was a massive shift to right. So I went that way
only to find that the left paid late. Clark and Hank Kennedy sailed away from
everyone to win -- we rounded the first mark a distant sixth, and the
photo boat was like a fly on a corpse. TeamResh was extremely consistent
throughout, with three straight seconds, but could not catch Fleet
Captain Che Hale, who managed a finish on day one and to stay out of serious
trouble after that.
Much thanks to Pops Mentasana and Charles and Joanna Smith for making
the trek South. (Pops, if the Gary thing doesn't work out, you can always
go with Team Schwenk).
