2004 Pines Lake Regatta

District I Championship, Leg 1

Pines Lake Sailing Club, Wayne, NJ

May 29

The Pines Lake Regatta (First leg of the District I Championship) was held on Saturday, May 29th. Fifteen boats registered. Conditions were wild with cold winds blowing close to 20 knots from all directions, following the passage of a frontal system. The start of racing was held up for more than an hour while skippers and crews decided if they wanted to venture out on the lake. As it turned out, five boats did not compete at all, and nine had one or more DNC's or DNF's. Only one boat, # 970 skippered by Brian Mohan Mohan and crew Ted Klein managed to complete all four races. The 5th race was scrubbed for lack of contestants.

During the races, Brent Barbehenn followed the fleet in a power boat, making notes of trim, tactics, and technique, which he presented during the lunch break.

Those who have sailed in this annual regatta over the 50 years of its history said that they never before had such wild conditions.
