2003 Irey Memorial Regatta

West River Sailing Club, Galesville, MD

June 14-15

Finally, after four straight regattas of rain, the sun came out.  No longer was the crew's most important job to cleat the jib and bail faster than we filled up with water.  No longer were we flying on instruments - the telltales actually came unstuck from the jib, and the solar-powered compass came back to life.  There were, however, several people that missed the memo on putting sun screen on when you take the oil-skins off.  I know one guy that will be sleeping on his face for a few days.  Ouch.

Saturday was perfect West River conditions.  The sea-breeze filled in at 11 AM sharp, and we got four great wind-ward leewards in.  There were nice shifts to play as the breeze wrapped around the point, and heated competition at for every position in the fleet.  Notable first day performances were turned in by Todd Lochner and Jennifer Campbell, who clearly have more speed than they have ever before - apparently new sails can help.  Kirby and Roberta Merhoff, who cut their honeymoon cruise a few days short to hop back in the jet, cracked the top half of the fleet for 2 of 4 of Saturday's races.  Also making an appearance in the top half - Carl and Faye Coscia in 530.  These finishes are testaments to the importance of hard work: these crews are relatively new to the fleet, but they have beenconsistently out on the water working on their skills.

Sunday was beautiful as well - cloudy yes, but with a nice Easterly flowing all day.  Things were particularly interesting upwind.  There was a distinct breeze advantage on the left side of the course, but the main channel for the pleasure boaters ran right down that way as well.  Those boats that could work the shifts to the left, without being blanketed by big cruisers or run down by the powerboats seemed to do pretty well.  Not coincidentally, these are just the conditions that Dave and Nan Irey used to regularly excel in, and for me at least, it was nice to be able to look back and think about how Dave would have done it.  Thanks to everyone at West River and the Irey family for their warm hospitality, great race committee work, and fabulous club.
