2003 Halloween Classic / District II Championships (Leg 3)

The weather was just beautiful, mostly sunny and into the low 60's by late afternoon.  The winds were very good on Saturday, out of the SW at 5 to 12 knots with 20-30 deg. shifts.  Sunday was a lot more hit and miss, out of the North more or less with holes that would cover most of the lake at times.  Being on the side that the new wind filed in from was as you might guess, a deciding factor.  And it was anyone’s guess where and when that would be.

So much for Mother Nature, as for the parts of the regatta that we were responsible for, that went even better.  We had 17 boats and crews and that didn’t count the 5 that had to cancel at the last moment.  It was a great mixture of participants from near and far, seasoned Jetters, new owners and guests.

Mohican fleet capt. Karen Hugon put together an outstanding event.  Wonderful food, food, and more wonderful food including the chili cook off.  Whose chili was voted the best?  Well a few ballots were misplaced and one or more chads were dangling but if you consider which very large pot at the end of the line was empty first....I WON!  The costume party was a blast, with everything from burglars to someone dressed as a bowling alley?!? to Hugh Heffner and a Bunny! To some guy from the Movie “Starwars” that smelled a little like burned chili.

Bill Buckels got in Mike Chambers Mueller and was obviously right at home going faster and faster until he parked in a “no air zone” in the last race, next to Koski, The Michos’s, and the Chambers.

It was the maiden voyage for Greg Koski’s new Jib Tech #1147 and the Parramore’s rebuilt Kenyon #544.  Mike and Jon Chambers were out for just the second time in their new Jib Tech #1148.  Each of these crews were making last minute additions and adjustments to the rigging.  The Chambers losing TWO halyards and missing the first two races and Laury Parramore explaining to Mike that the new jib lead idea just needed a little “fine tuning”......like maybe with a chainsaw or gasoline and matches?

Greg Koski and first time dinghy crew Brad Hollingsworth took the cake for improvising with an unfinished rig and some kind of eyeballing-it tuning.  They nailed the start of the first race and within less than two minutes were ahead of.........well, no one unless you count the left hand starting mark.  Lots of barnyard adjustments after the racing on Saturday and yes things were starting to come together Sunday.

Guests Hank and Katie Boissineaut were sailing a great series, never mind Katie is all of six years old.  (The only thing that she found even a little unsettling was her face to face encounter with that dude from the star wars movie...Dad, I think I just got a whiff of the dark side of the force!)

There was a crew race at the end of the day on Saturday and it was a great race.   The winner, Jack Finefrock of Thistle fame said he really enjoyed steering the Jet and did any of us know that Brent was an absolutely lousy crew!?

The highlight of the whole event were the happy faces everywhere you went.  Thank you to everyone that makes moments like these possible and happen.  Thank you again to every one that took the time and made the effort to share it all with us.
