2002 Halloween Classic

Mohican Sailing Club, Mansfield, OH

October 19-20

Twenty boats.  A little rain.  A lot of wind.  Some ice on Sunday morning.  And the HE-MAN breakfast.  If you didn't attend the Halloween Classic/Silver Chevron in late October at Mohican Sailing Club, Mansfield OH, you missed all of the above.

Weather was questionable upon arrival Saturday morning with light rain and much wind.  But the bad stuff cleared out quickly, and winds settled into the 10-20 kt. range from the NW.  Puffy, shifty, slam bam sailing!

Saturday's racing was challenging, and included capsizes, breakdowns, and early retirees.  The first casualty was Team Koski when the tiller broke just before the first race.  Although they missed the race, a quick fix at the dock had them back out the rest of the day at the front of the pack.  Racing was tight with many position changes.  Those who kept their "bows pointed towards the mark" made out best.

With the racing over for the day, the real competition began - the chili cookoff.  We expected a rough night when warning signs were posted for small children and puppies not to eat too much.  Featured were six types of chili, one of which was disqualified for having too much filet mignon in it.  The very tasty Zaugg entry barely qualified as one chili bean was finally found late in the game.  With all the entries equally delicious, no clear winner emerged.  A raffle and several games of Zaugg pong (ping pong with up to 12 contestants) finished out the festivities, and we all went home hoping it wouldn't be too cold to keep the windows open.

By then it was less than 12 hours from the big event - the HE-MAN BREAKFAST.  Anxiety ran high when Marion warned everyone to get there early due to the anticipated long lines.  Sunday dawned clear and cold with a huge fog over the lake, and substantial ice on the boats.  Since there wasn't any wind, we all relaxed and enjoyed the HE-MAN breakfast that much more.  Everyone left a few pounds heavier.

After a slight delay, the wind filled in perfectly from the north at about 8 kts.  Chris and Paula Hennon nailed the start and sailed a great first leg to arrive at the windward mark first.  Trimming their sails to the "shape of speed", they held on for a second place finish, and prompted Chris to say "I am now addicted to sailing".  That's what we like to hear.

The 20 boat turnout was impressive, and included entries from NJ, NC, and MD.  I have a feeling there will be more next year.
