2001 Mohican Chiefs Regatta/District II Championship

Mohican Sailing Club, Mansfield, OH

June 2-3

District 2 of the Jet-14 Class took advantage of the Mohican Sailing
Club's Chief's Regatta, June 2 and 3, to determine their 2001
championship. Dave and Sue Michos from Edgewater Yacht Club went on the
warpath early and held off two serious challengers to declare
themselves chiefs. Their most serious challenge was from another visitor, Nathan
Ireland with local Ben Stock crewing. Braves Mike and Jon Chambers
mounted the best campaign from the home camp.

Mother nature was the biggest factor in Saturday's lone race. A rainy
morning turned to a windy afternoon long enough for one race but, as
forecasted, turned stormy resulting in the abandonment of the second
race and cancellation of the rest of Saturday's racing. The Ireland
went to the laundry as the Michos boat remained upright to finish first.
Marion Zaugg with Karen, the Seattle sister, crewing used the harsh
conditions to get their best finish of the regatta.Tom Joudrey found
his crew dad Russ preferred the highwinds also as he got his only finish in
the top three. Karen Hugon and her crew Ann Roessner, also had their
best race in the pre-stormy conditions on Saturday.

Sunday presented nearly ideal sailing conditions as the wind filled in
early from the west and became more steady and more northerly allowing
three nice races. Ireland kept the race leaders on their guard, winning
the second and fourth race. The rest of their afternoon was spent
remembering Saturday's capsize and Awhatiffing. Team Chambers was also
heard pointing out how the lighter winds favored the more tactful
sailors and pointing toward their two seconds and a third on Sunday.

Bill Regan and daughter Erin sailed consistenly both days as they had
their first ride in a Jet. If their was a prize for consistency,
however, it went to Paula Dzuroff and crew-fiancé Chris Hennon. The
Brants recovered from a DNF on Saturday and finished all of Sunday's
races. Barb Joudrey and Tara Regan had had enough after Saturday's
fiasco and one Sunday race and decided their best contribution was to
build a warm fire in the clubhouse for the rest.
