October 25-26
11 Jet 14’s entered the last regatta of the season on the Chesapeake. After the two previous regattas on the Bay were lost to Hurricane Isabel, folks were anxious to get back out on the water, even if the water was a bit chilly. While hats and gloves were necessary Saturday morning, folks were sporting shorts and t-shirts in the parking lot on Sunday afternoon.
We sailed three races each day in a southerly with pressure ranging from 8-18. Needless to say, it was a bit exciting at the high end of that range, especially for those of us who had not been in the boat for a while. Old and recently restored boats battled new boats, borrowed boats battled blue boats and local teams battled teams from far, far away. The day’s stories were traded back in the boat yard on Saturday over pizza, beer, warm cider and, for some us, a splash or two of rum.
Although they were not able to participate in the water activities due to a D.C. jaywalker (ask Carl about the details), special thanks go to Carl and Faye Coscia who got us all organized and out on the water.
As for the results, Dave and Sue Michos took overall honors with recently restored 217. After many, many months of hard work and what looked to be gallons of epoxy, the newly re-christened boat was hard to beat. Michael and Laury Parramore took third overall and second in the Districts in the new and improved 544. For those of you counting at home, 544 is the ninth Jet to be introduced to and sailed during their 10 year marriage. As was noted at the awards ceremony, it is nice to see that Michael’s fear of commitment is limited to hulls.
All in all, I think everyone had fun both out on the water and back on shore. I look forward to seeing everyone again real soon.
